Wow !

New Year's day came early for us. The Alarm woke us at 5:15 AM - last day of deer hunting season. As promised by the weather forecast it had been snowing all night was still.

By 9:00 AM the Snow fall had mostly stopped but the stiff breeze kept the air full of fine snow. Duncan loved it. He romped in snow up to his belly and dug for apples under an apple tree so could toss it in the air and dig to find it again. Then he laid down in the snow to eat his frozen apple. He raced through the deepest snow he could find, making great arcs but always coming back to me. He ran in small circles as fast as he could go, first one direction and then the other. I wonder if dogs get dizzy running in circles like we do spinning so have to switch directions.

The bird feeder was covered with House Sparrows, a Dove, House finches and Juncos. The little house finches rosy breast were barely discernible in the dim light, but their soft calls were sweet over the sound of the wind in the evergreens.

I took Duncan back inside so I could use my camera. When he is out with you, you can only concentrate on him. For him everything is a game in which Duncan must participate. Not a safe thing to do with a digital camera.

The temperature is about at freezing so the snow is wet and clings to everything. Though the cloud cover is thick and the light dim what a beautiful way to welcome the new year.
